Changes in Statutory Sick Pay: Fight against COVID-19

2020 Budget announces changes to the Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) rules temporarily, in United Kingdom's attempt to fight against the coronovirus (COVID-19).

In this unprecedented situation, the government of the United Kingdom is concerned about the effect that the outbreak will have on the livelihood of people. They are taking new measures, every day to try to protect the population physically and financially. They have brought forward Emergency legislation. For all employees, who have been advised to self- isolate as well as who care for others who self-isolate, can now apply for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). Individuals are eligible to get SSP from the first day of self-isolating. This change was made on the 13th of March.

The following were the existing rules of SSP:

Individuals are eligible for £94.25 per week Statutory Sick Pay if they are too ill to work. It’s paid by the employer for up to 28 weeks. Employees cannot get paid less than the statutory amount, but they can get more if the company has a sick pay scheme.

Employees can check the below criteria to see if they qualify for SSP:

1. Individuals classed as an employee and have done some work for the employer

2. The employee should have been off work sick for 4 or more days in a row (including non-working days). This has changed. The employees are eligible to receive SSP from day one.

3. The employee earns an average of at least £118 per week

4. The employee informs the employer of the sickness before their deadline – or within 7 days if they do not have one
